The First Cake

I baked my first cake of the year, chocolate pound cake. Just 51 more to go to reach my goal!

I really enjoyed it, although with 1/2 pound of butter in it, I am afraid to get on the scale tomorrow morning...

As I ate the cake I thought, this is really good. But it is not what I would call a signature cake, one that family and friends will always remember me by, or that will be put in a book of family recipes.

On to the next cake...

Dewey

One of my friends gave me a copy of Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World for Christmas. I have to admit I hesitated to start reading it because often sad things happen in animal stories. But that beautiful orange cat's face kept staring up at me from the cover, and I couldn't resist him any longer.

I love the book! It is a very sweet cat story, and plumbs the depths of the human-cat (or cat-human) relationship. The author, Vicki Myron, also weaves an interesting amount of local Iowa history into the tale.

A very good read for cat lovers!
